How to Become a Clipper
A clipper turns long recordings into short clips that hold a stranger’s attention for thirty seconds. No film degree required. The job is judgment first and software second: knowing which forty seconds of a two-hour conversation carry the whole episode, then cutting them clean.
What the job actually is
You watch or scan long-form video, usually podcasts, streams, or webinars. You mark the moments worth clipping: a story, an argument, a number nobody expected, a confession. Then you cut the moment so it stands alone, add captions, format it for the platform it will live on, and deliver.
That is the whole loop. Everything else, effects, transitions, fancy graphics, is decoration on top of those two skills: spotting the moment and cutting it so it needs no context.
The skills that matter, in order
- Moment selection. The clip lives or dies here. A perfectly edited boring moment is still boring.
- The first two seconds. Every clip opens cold, on the strongest line, not on the setup.
- Captions. Most short video is watched on mute or half-attention. Clean, accurate, readable captions are the craft.
- Audio. Level, de-noised, no clipping. Bad audio kills good clips faster than bad video.
- Platform formats. 9:16 framing, safe zones, lengths. Mechanical, learnable in a week.
Learn in this order
Cut twenty practice clips from public podcasts before you touch a paying client. Pick shows you actually listen to, because taste in moments comes from caring about the material. Study your own cuts a day later with fresh eyes: where would you have swiped away?
Learn one editor properly instead of three badly. Any serious tool works; the tool list is on our best editing tools page. Spend the saved time on retention: watch clips in your niche and note exactly where each one earns the next five seconds.
Getting hired
There are two doors. Marketplaces pay per view: you clip campaigns and earn when clips perform, which means you can also earn nothing. Agencies like ClipHaus pay a fixed rate per approved clip: the rate is agreed before the job, and the money is earned when the clip passes QC.
Either way, hiring is decided by proof. A small portfolio of before-and-after cuts beats any CV. When you apply here, send three clips you cut from long-form video and the timestamps of the moments in the originals, so we can judge the judgment, not just the edit.
